From the station at Aigle the small train to Aigle, decked out in red and white, scoots gaily along the heights of Ollon, giving its travelers a taste of the beauties of the Chablais. Farther on, the Aigle-Ollon-Monthey-Champéry changes direction and plunges towards St-Trip Hon, affording tourists slight thrills and spectacular sights. Crossing the Rhône plain, the AOMC now winds along Valaisan country to reach Monthey. That’s where the adventure starts. The cog train to Aigle attacks the mountain side, unveiling a sumptuous panorama on its way, spotted with villages typical of the Val d’Illiez before reaching Champéry and its “Gateways to the Sun,” a true paradise for sports enthusiasts summer or winter. The Aigle-Leysin line is a busy route connecting the SBB main line to the ski resort of Leysin, in Vaud. Trains to Aigle have a familiar livery to British visitors - GWR chocolate and cream! The Aigle - Leysin Railway was the earliest of the narrow gauge lines in the Chablais area of Switzerland. The line was opened on 24 July 1892, a 1,000 mm 3 ft 33⁄8 in-gauge cog-wheel railway using the Abt rack system. Aigle's main railway station is not only served by the trains to Aigle of the Swiss Federal Railways but also those of three local, narrow-gauge railways: the Aigle-Ollon-Monthey-Champéry the Aigle–Leysin AL and the Aigle-Sépey-Diablerets ASD. A 30-minute cogwheel train to Aigle, home to an impressive wine museum, to Leysin, also known as the sun terrace of the area. The views from here are spectacular and well worth the trip. A 45-minute train to Aigle to Les Diablerets, gateway to the Les Diablerets Glacier where eternal snow reigns. On the way, cross through the wild and romantic Valley of Les Ormonts. Depart Aigle and ride through the Val d’Illiez to Champéry in the Portes de Soleil area. In winter, Champéry is a skier’s mecca, and in summer a hiking paradise.
The train to Aigle also stops in Troistorrents, from where a bus leaves for Morgins, another resort of this area. All trains usually run at hourly intervals.. An hour of pure bliss! The Aigle-Ollon-Monthey-Champerey railway's route runs west from Aigle across the Rhone and valley, and then climbs to the ski resort of Champery. These railways, plus the BVD Bex-Villars-Bretaye which runs east from Bex, a village just south of Aigle, are operated by Transports Publics du Chablais with the motto: "Depuis plus de cent ans et contre toute attente, des lignes des TPC reunissent plaine et montagne, Vaud et Valais, Ville et champagne, terres catholiques and Protestants." Translated roughly: "For over 100 years and contrary to all expectations, the railways of TPC have joined plain and mountain, town and country, of the Vaud and Valais districts of Switzerland, land of both Catholics and Protestants." The TPC "motto" refers to the religious composition and history of the general region known historically as the Chablais which has known turmoil. In 1846-7, the Valais canton tried to secede from Switzerland with the intention of joining a proposed Catholic confederation of cantons called the Sonderbund, but this was put down by Swiss Federal troops. The ASD, the AL, and the BVB railways operate within the canton of Vaud. The AOMC operates in the Vaud and into the Canton of Valais when it crosses the Rhone River to reach Monthey and Champery. There are plans, awaiting approval, for the extension of the train to Aigle-Leysin line deep into to the Berne use whereby passengers will be able to travel, without transfers, to a site that provides magnificent views of the Alps, Jura and Lake Geneva. This project is an investment which will benefit the entire region and offer a boost to tourism, the region's No. 1 industry. Landslides have required periodic emergency work to stabilize the adjacent soil and rock, much of which is covered in coniferous forest. This has included the erection of 150 meters of mesh barrier to prevent falling rock reaching the tracks and to offer protection to railway workers. Ride on a smooth, comfortable train through spectacular Alpine scenery.
The train to Aigle runs from the early morning hours until the late evening. Aigle includes the villages of Le Cloître, Vers Pousaz, and Fontanney. The surrounding municipalities are Yvorne, Leysin, Ormont-Dessous, and Ollon in the canton of Vaud, and Vouvry and Collombey-Muraz in the canton of Valais. Aigle lies at an elevation of 415 m. about 13 km south-southeast of Montreux. It is on the east edge of the Rhône valley, at the foot of the Swiss Alps. Explore aigle, as it waits for its admirers.
