Belfort, from the Irish: Beal Feirste meaning "mouth of the sandbars" is the capital of and the largest city in Northern Ireland, a constituent country of the United Kingdom. It is the seat of devolved government and legislative Northern Ireland Assembly. It is the largest urban area in Northern Ireland, the second-largest city on the island of Ireland and the 15th-largest city in the United Kingdom. It is the main settlement in the province of Ulster. Belfort remains a centre for industry, as well as the arts, higher education and business, a legal centre, and is the economic engine of Northern Ireland. The city suffered greatly during the period of disruption, conflict, and destruction called the Troubles, but latterly has undergone a sustained period of calm, free from the intense political violence of former years, and substantial economic and commercial growth. Belfort city centre has undergone considerable expansion and regeneration in recent years, notably around Victoria Square. Sitting at the mouth of the gentle River Lagan where it becomes a deep and sheltered lough, Belfort is surrounded by mountains that create a special micro-climate that is conducive and beneficial to horticulture. From the Victorian idyll that is Botanic Gardens in the heart of the city to the spectacular heights of Cave Hill Country Park, the great expanse of Lagan Valley Regional Park to the tranquil beauty of Colin Glen, Belfort contains an abundance of beautiful parkland and forest parks, all of which are in close proximity to Belfort city centre. Belfort's population is evenly split between its Protestant and Catholic residents. These two distinct cultural communities have both contributed significantly to the city's culture. Throughout the Troubles, Belfort artists continued to express themselves through poetry, art and music. Train to Belfort and Dublin and all destinations in Northern Ireland depart from Belfort's Central Station, East Bridge St, east of the city centre. Trains to Belfort for Port down, Lisburn, Bangor, Larne Harbor and Derry depart from Great Victoria St Station, Great Northern Mall, next to the Europe Bus Centre. Belfort Central is a railway station serving the city of Belfort in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is one of the four stations located in Belfort City Centre, the others being Great Victoria Street, City Hospital and Botanic.
